Why we are not a game studio (yet)

In this article you will know why we aren’t a game studio (yet).

Not enough knowledge

When starting out with GameMaker, I created games with the help of written and video tutorials. But there was not enough guidance, no support, was on my own. You had paid institutions like GameSkool but had no money for that. And other courses were expensive. That’s why I stopped using GameMaker.

Outdated software

Software used to created games is outdated. Used GameMaker 8 Pro, that’s from the time when GameMaker was acquired by YoYoGames. But later on, GameMaker was bought by Opera and they created a totally new version. Nowadays it’s possible to create games for different platform. The new GameMaker focuses on the commercial game developer. Don’t know how to work with it and aren’t commercial yet.

Games are freeware

Most games of this website are created with The Game Maker Apprentice: a book that learns beginners the basics of game development. The resources from this book are freeware, that means they can’t be sold. Reason why I can’t make money from these games, unless I come up with my own resources and storyline.

Lack of manpower

Am a one-man-show. Built my games myself. Have never collaborated with others. I mean, that me and some friends sat in one room and we decided to work on a game. Just downloaded resources from the internet. There are game developers, graphic artists and more in Suriname, but never had the chance to work with them. A friend ask me to join his game development project, he was looking for Unity developers. Showed him my games, but he told me that it was not he was looking for. He is currently the CEO of Esports Suriname. And in my own I haven’t enough skills and resources to work on other aspects of game development, such as sound and graphics

Don’t know how to code

Have used the programming language from Game Maker (GML) in my games. But that was just copy-paste from the tutorials. Found some old scripts from the GameMaker forum, copied and modified them, that’s all. Further, know some Java and PHP but are not very proficient in it. That’s why I never tried Unity, because I see coding as a challenge.
